With three knocks on the door and the feisty bark from Daisy the miniature pup, Marsanne Brands happily met us at the door and welcomed our SOUL team into their creative layer of a quaint New York City office draped and splattered with inspiration. Sketches, prints, finished and unfinished visions stimulated the eyes and elevated the energy in the room. Hung up were racks of exploration and in each piece...a hidden treasure; hand embroidered messages, sequins, random but perfectly placed eyeballs, floral appliques, and much much more. Soon after, the Hippie Tribe creatives, De'Nard (DP ThuHippie) and Niko (Blond.Bomber) , showed up like two kids in a candy shop -- adventuring through the racks and instantly connecting with the vibe of Marsanne Brands. Everyone sifted through the racks to find the perfect pieces and suggest different outfit ideas. It was undeniable that this creative collab with all members of Marsanne Brands, Hippie Tribe, and SOUL would truly make for a perfect match.
The vibes for the boys were obvious; Niko would represent the warm side of Hippie Tribe - incorporating peach, blush tones, and floral embroidery. De'Nard would serve the edge, wearing Marsanne Brands’ more monstrous, and uniquely weird, yet staggering creations. We wanted to highlight the clothing and the identity of the twosome as individuals as well as the musical influence of Hippie Tribe and the style it conveys. The intention behind putting certain looks together was partly a consideration of what would read best on camera, but most importantly - what made the guys feel the most like themselves. Whatever details Hippie Tribe liked, Marsanne Brands was willing to supply. This led to the addition of the pins that Niko wore and the holographic goggles in which SOUL styled with the peach jacket, bringing out the futuristic colors in the goggles and transporting the vibe of the shoot to a different world.
With each individual on set having a creative eye, there was never a second when the shoot lacked innovation or optimism. Marsanne Brands and Hippie Tribe are both aware of the audience they work/play for and what they both want to represent. Working with the two groups made it easy to try different things and express any ideas or concerns. As if their thoughts were one, Chloe from Marsanne Brands suggested to bring a speaker to play music at the shoot. Instantaneously, Niko’s eyes lit up in agreement and eagerness, hoping to play Hippie Tribe’s new music. This had to be one of the best decisions - nothing made De'Nard and Niko feel more themselves than when they were listening to their songs and dancing with each other. The vibe was then transformed into a musically driven atmosphere.
SOUL took advantage of everything the shoot location provided, meaning that the entryway staircase to the room became a shoot location. Also, the closet-sized outside patio, that too, along with the unfinished, urban-inspired rooftop that wrapped up the shoot. At each location, the boys had something new to show the camera. In the first location, all that was provided was a sheet in the background and two stools. The boys took over this space and before the camera was even turned on, they were firing off poses, jamming to the eccentric hip hop/rap music and genuinely having fun. The comfort the guys found in listening to their music and being together was effective in that it showed in the pictures who Hippie Tribe is as a band. Their poses would stem from the lyrics they wrote, and with the snap of the camera, art was made. The dynamic was indescribable between the two guys and it was truly special to see them have so much fun for everyone there.
Both Marsanne Brands and Hippie Tribe are young but extremely determined to share their creativity and selves with the world. Hippie Tribe, oozing with rhythm, energy, emotion and passion has the potential to take over the music industry. With new music releasing soon, they are on the rise to something great and are truly a band to look out for. Marsanne Brands are also ones to watch as their creativity is neverending. Their ability to take something and elevate it to something even more beautiful is beyond what this world has seen. Their signatures and styles will soon make them an easily identifiable brand. When working with these two groups, it was easy to find inspiration and encouragement to never stop creating.
