Nestled comfortably in the basement of Manhattan’s TMPL Gym; RIVINI’s Fall/Winter 2018 Bridal collection ultimately embraced many traditional forms of bridal couture while simultaneously adopting a modern attitude.
Rita Vinieris composed 36 looks with various approaches to the same idea. The first looks were directly contemporary; Opening with two sporty casual dresses that seemed to mirror standard sports jerseys. The dresses were primarily mesh and consisted of large jersey numbers that were topped off with ‘RIVINI’ in bold print.
The first impression given off by the dresses was surprising, however, set an important tone as the show seeked to emulate the show’s theme of “your body is your temple” suggesting that Vinieris wanted to find the medium between athleticism and elegance. The next few ensembles signified a transition as they were less sporty but just as relaxed, consisting of crop tops and wide legged trousers.
The runway then spawned more traditional gowns and although silhouettes varied a time honored sensibility was present throughout.”What kept these looks contemporary were the accessories, as sunglasses and transparent visors modernized time tested shapes. Continuing from this idea, a veil was interestingly hung from one pair of glasses, forcing a close proximity of old versus new. Along the crossroads, a variety of dresses were paired with sneakers, emphasizing a casual approach to the bridal gowns. The final looks introduced color, with a closing muted ‘Royal blue corset ball gown’ which included sequins with darker blues and dull pinks.
The brutal concrete support beams and beating electronic music was unmistakingly modern but didn’t quite match the harmony that was the seamless juxtaposition of old and new. However, even with the distraction, the collection was an impressive casual twist and a celebration of modernities endless clash with form and tradition. Within this clash lies a satisfying sense of oneself, a self that admires both past and present, living in a sanctuary of its own making.
