The Pier Children is inspired by, and takes from, the culture of the West Side piers in Manhattan, during the late 70’s/ early 80’s. Prior to the gentrification of the surrounding neighborhoods, and the revamping of the piers, places such as Chelsea piers were highly undesirable--essentially why we chose to recreate the moment here.
Today, we see a spectacular state of the arts family complex filled with private event spaces, a skate park, dinner cruises, a bowling alley, golf center, sports center and even private yachts. However, these attractions are built on the very grounds where street kids would come to tag their names, drug dealers would come to push their weight, junkies would come to get their fix and anonymous Johns would come to find their girl or boy for the evening. A far reality from the place we see today, I thought it would be interesting to unpack a long forgotten demographic, and perhaps an unknown demographic of people- to my generation.
