Torrid put on the first ever plus size NYFW show and stayed true to their rhetoric of a Torrid woman style as being “a total badass.” They displayed 40 looks with the inspiration for the collection ranging from floral bohemian, to grecian, to sexy clubwear. The collection contained a number of long flowing lace dresses, leather corsets, and casual wear. However, the collection was not notable for the designs-many of which looked cheap and ill fitted, but for the powerful cast of models.
The women that walked Torrid’s runway are some of the most worked plus-size models in the industry, that are often unnamed or unrecognized. These women are what brought the clothing to life on the runway and are what mattered in this collection. Size inclusivity, Torrid’s mission as a size 10-30 label, was center stage and more powerful than the detailed leather jackets presented.
A notable part of the show was the group of finalists from Torrid Model Search. These women, ranging in size and in age are what Torrid should focus on-the women actually wearing the clothing.
